In 3 words: Above and beyond.

What you need to know: Summer Berg wears many hats. For starters, she is the President and Managing Broker of Engel & Volkers Aspen, Snowmass, Basalt and Carbondale, managing the day-to-day business and contractual work of over 50 brokers and staff. She’s a real estate attorney with a mile-long C.V. that includes items like graduating magna cum laude as a Harlan Scholar of the Center for Real Estate Studies at New York Law; and working as a real estate associate for the international law firm Troutman Sanders in New York City where she handled everything from shopping center developments to complex financing structure of skyscrapers. After expanding her own real estate portfolio, she’s an investor, and de facto general contractor. She’s also the mother of two kids under the age of 5.

“I love getting my hands dirty and remodeling,” she says. “I love demo, painting, and picking out furniture and tile. I love understanding all the construction trades. I even considered getting my general contractor’s license just for fun to gain an understanding of the entire process. I like to be hands-on in all aspects of my business.”

Summer moved to Aspen in 2010 to join her husband Erik. “I was living in New York City practicing law at a big firm when I first met my husband,” she says. “A year later, I got a job practicing in Colorado. Then when our son was born, I decided to join forces with Erik to grow our company, and the rest is history.” Today, their business is consistently in the top 5 grossing real estate companies in the Roaring Fork Valley.

What she brings to the table: “The type of transactions I worked on in my legal career are all the same types of transactions I help manage in the real estate brokerage,” Summer says. “Having the background as a transactional attorney, I have experience with everything from residential and commercial leasing to acquisitions, zoning, water rights, lending laws. There are so many legal issues that come up in a real estate brokerage, and real estate in this valley can be very complex in terms of the land, the typography, septic, water rights, condominiums, homeowner’s associations, and more. It runs the whole gamut.”

On a personal note … Summer grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and was intrigued by real estate development from an early age. “Real estate is my passion and that’s why I got into it,” she says. “I love doing what I do.” Despite all the responsibility she has at work, Summer strives for a life/work balance. “I love hiking, biking and skiing. I need that balance with everything I have going on. Getting outside is like meditation for me.” Part of that balance also means giving back. Summer was a founding member of both the Aspen Next Generation Advisory Commission and the Aspen Professional Mentorship Program. She is also a member of other real estate and legal organizations.
